Why is Udawalawe important for elephant conservation?

Udawalawe is a global cornerstone for conservation because it works as a secure, massive sanctuary that actively reduces human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka’s agricultural heartland.

When it fences off a large and resource-rich stretch, the park stops roaming herds from ruining crops near villages, and historically, this outcome led to fatal retaliations. Also, it has a strong direct synergy with the Elephant Transit Home, so injured or orphaned calves from across the whole island can be nursed back to health and later reintroduced into a sheltered, thriving wild population.
