Why do buffalo wallow in mud?
Water buffalo roll in mud mainly to cool down and protect their skin from biting insects and strong sun. They have only a small number of sweat glands. In Sri Lanka’s hot, humid weather, mud helps them stay comfortable.
When the mud dries, it hardens into a firm layer. That layer can choke off ticks, discourage mosquitoes, and reduce painful sunburn while the buffalo keep grazing in open areas.
