Which spiders are found in Udawalawe National Park?
In Udawalawe, the most visually noticeable spiders are the harmless Giant Golden Orb Weavers (Nephila pilipes) and also more reclusive ground walkers such as the Sri Lankan Ornamental Tarantula.
The Giant Golden Orb Weaver is often seen hanging between trees, creating huge, detailed webs that cross the park’s wooded paths. Even if their large frame and bright yellow-black colours might feel a bit shocking at first, these spiders are completely harmless to humans. They make excellent photo material for macro shots, especially during dawn drives when the heavy dew makes their golden silk gleam.
