What wildlife can I see in Udawalawe National Park?

Beyond its widely noted population of Asian Elephants, Udawalawe comes with plenty more life too: Water Buffaloes, Mugger Crocodiles, wandering Spotted Deer, Wild Boars, Sambar Deer, Toque Macaques in the trees, and quite an impressive spread of endemic birds.

Even if the park is commonly spoken about as an elephant refuge, the biodiversity extends far beyond that. During a typical three-hour game drive, people regularly see:

  • Mammals: Golden Jackals, Grey Langurs, and now and then the hard-to-spot Sri Lankan Leopard.
  • Reptiles: Water Monitors, Bengal Monitors, and Mugger Crocodiles lazing on the reservoir edges.
  • Birds: Peafowl, Hornbills, Kingfishers, and large birds of prey as well.
