What trees are commonly found in Udawalawe?

The most common tree species managing to thrive in Udawalawe’s dry-zone setting include Satin (Burutha), Ehala, Lunumidella, and the impressive Kumbuk.

Since a lot of the park’s earlier, tight canopy was cleared in the past before it became protected, the plant life is now leaning heavily towards a set of tougher, persistent species:

• Satinwood and Ehala: These are usually seen scattered across the open savanna expanses.
• Kumbuk and Mandorang: These huge, water-requiring trees stand out within the riverine forests, growing along the Walawe River banks and giving real shade for elephants that are resting.
