What plants do monkeys eat?

In Udawalawe, toque macaques and grey langurs eat a pretty varied menu that comes from the dry zone. You will find wild fruits, berries, seeds, flowers, and also soft young leaves from those dry-zone tree habitats. Among all that, Ficus (fig) tree species are a big food item for these primates, like a really reliable option.

Langurs have specialised stomachs, so they manage to break down tough older leaves. Because of that, they stay flexible even when the drought season shows up. Macaques, on the other hand, take a more opportunistic path for feeding, meaning they grab what is available. During the fruiting period, they are frequently spotted raiding fruit-bearing trees such as Palu (Manilkara hexandra) and Weera (Drypetes sepiaria), sometimes in quite noisy groups.
