What plants do buffalo prefer?

Wild water buffalo are heavy grazers. They mostly eat plants that grow in or near water, plus rough tropical grasses. They also eat sedges when those plants grow thick along the edge of the water.

Their digestive system is strong and well-matched to this kind of food. It helps them pull nutrients from tough, fibrous plants. Other animals that graze more carefully may skip such food. When drought gets bad and fresh grass is hard to find, the buffalo shift. They browse on dried leaves that hang low and on thorny shrubs to keep going.
