What is an Udawalawe safari?
An Udawalawe safari is a guided wildlife experience carried out in a modified 4×4 vehicle; it goes through the open scrublands of Udawalawe National Park, yes. The main aim of this outing is to spot Sri Lanka’s wild elephants in their natural surroundings, where they actually roam.
Most people book the safari for early morning, or sometimes late afternoon, and it usually runs 3 to 4 hours. You will be with a driver, and often a wildlife tracker as well, who steers the rough dirt paths, points out well-camouflaged plants and animals, then gets the jeep positioned safely, so the photos come out at the right angle.
