What animals are most commonly seen in Udawalawe National Park?

Asian elephant is by far the animal that people see the most; then right after that, wild water buffalo show up, along with spotted deer (chital) and also mugger crocodiles; it feels like they’re always there.

The park’s big scrublands and its central water spots make a grazing landscape that is very easy to notice even at a distance.

  • Frequent Sightings: Guests often notice troops of grey langurs, wild boars, and the lively Indian peafowl just wandering along the tracks.
  • Predators: With so much prey around, it maintains a strong population of jackals; still, they’re incredibly sneaky, and the rare Sri Lankan leopard too.
