Udawalawe Wildlife & Animals
Udawalawe is, without doubt, one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian elephants, but the park is also sort of a living sanctuary where many kinds of dry-zone wildlife continue to thrive. The open terrain helps with spotting everything more than the dense jungle parks, because there is less hiding.
Beyond the roughly 600 resident elephants, the grounds also hold big herds of water buffalo and spotted deer, alongside sambar deer that wander through. Predators show up too: crocodiles for the water edges, golden jackals around the paths, and a very small, hard-to-notice group of leopards. For birdwatchers, it becomes a true delight, with majestic raptors like the crested serpent eagle, plus vibrant peacocks that often feel almost too close.
