Is self-driving recommended for Udawalawe?

Self-driving is not allowed inside Udawalawe National Park for regular visitors; all guests have to move through the reserve using an authorised 4×4 safari jeep, with a licensed guide who is actually trained.

You can still drive your rental car up to the ticketing office and the main entrance, but it is not permitted to go inside the park area. The ground is rugged and mostly unpaved, so only specialised off-road vehicles can handle it. On top of that, following the tricky trail web and reading unpredictable wildlife behaviour safely needs local know-how that a trained professional truly provides.
