Is dengue a risk in Udawalawe?

Dengue fever is a known health risk around Udawalawe. This matches what is seen in many parts of Sri Lanka that are tropical and low in altitude, where mosquitoes are common.

The risk of spread can rise after heavy monsoon rains. Pools of standing water can form, and that helps Aedes mosquitoes reproduce. Visitors can reduce their risk by using DEET-based repellent all over, wearing light-coloured long sleeves especially at dawn and dusk, and sleeping under mosquito nets without holes.
