How far is Udawalawe from Ella?

Udawalawe National Park is about 90 kilometres (56 miles) south of Ella, and the drive takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on whether you take a private taxi or car. The route usually follows the scenic Wellawaya-Thanamalwila road, which feels more relaxed than expected.

Because it is a relatively short distance, Udawalawe has become a very common day trip or next stop for people travelling through the Sri Lankan Hill Country. Direct public buses are limited, so you can first take a bus from Ella to Wellawaya, then switch to another bus going towards Thanamalwila and Udawalawe, but a private transfer is much quicker and more comfortable.
