Do I need a safari jeep to enter Udawalawe?
Yes, entering Udawalawe National Park requires a specially modified, robust 4×4 safari jeep. Regular cars, vans, and even walking are not allowed inside the park’s protected boundaries.
The park is mostly made up of unpaved, rutted dirt tracks and areas that become seasonally muddy, so a four-wheel drive is essential. Safari jeeps are built for this, with raised open-sided seating, which gives better sightlines for wildlife viewing, while still following the safety and operational rules put in place by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
