Birdwatching & Bird Photography

Udawalawe is a top spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography. Many bird species have been logged there, with over 200 recorded. You can see raptors riding the air, bright waterbirds, and some rare endemic species too.

For clear photos, use a long telephoto lens. A focal length of 400mm or more works well. Keep your distance and move slowly so you do not frighten the birds. Try to plan your sessions for early morning or late afternoon. The light then is softer and angled, which helps bring out vivid feathers. With that light, birds like the Malabar pied hornbill and the crested serpent eagle show striking colours.
