Are venomous snakes common in Udawalawe?

Venomous snakes do live in the Udawalawe ecosystem, for example, cobras and Russell’s vipers, but tourists usually don’t see them. When people come for a safari, they stay safe in the high-standing safari vehicles throughout the trip, not getting out, even for a quick look.

Snakes in the dry zone often sidestep human activity and also the loud vibrations from diesel jeep engines. Visitors are not allowed to wander around inside the park (except at certain, pre-cleared rest zones), so the danger of snakebite stays very low. If a snake appears on the track, the guides keep a careful distance, so everyone can observe it without getting close.
