Are Udawalawe elephants wild?
Yes, the elephants inside Udawalawe National Park are fully wild and move freely around; the reserve spreads over 30,000+ hectares. They are not captive, not trained, and not hemmed in by inner fencing, so they can show natural herd patterns without interference.
The only real exception nearby is the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home; it is set just outside the park limits. That place takes in orphaned elephant calves for rehabilitation, with very little human presence, and when the calves are fit enough, they are returned fully to the wild.
