Are there deer in Udawalawe National Park?

Yes, multiple species of deer thrive in Udawalawe, with the Spotted Deer (Chital) being the most abundant and frequently sighted. Sambar Deer and the elusive Barking Deer are present in the park, though sightings can be occasional.

Large groups of Spotted Deer graze across open grasslands and often gather near water sources. This behaviour makes them a critical prey resource for the park’s leopard population. Sambar Deer are bigger and favour thicker woodland shade, so they are harder to spot, and they usually show up around dusk.
