How much of Udawalawe National Park is accessible to visitors?

Only about one-third of Udawalawe National Park’s total 30,821 hectares is open to the public through the official tourist jeep routes.

The portion that visitors can reach is mostly clumped around the southern entrance and near the edges of the Udawalawe Reservoir. The Department of Wildlife Conservation purposefully limits entry into the deeper northern and western parts of the park to keep the habitats pristine and undisturbed for the wildlife, so that human presence and vehicular strain are kept as low as possible.
