Is a telephoto lens necessary for Udawalawe?

Yes, bringing a telephoto lens (ideally 200mm to 400mm, or longer) is highly recommended if you want to get higher-quality wildlife photography in Udawalawe.

Elephants will often walk right beside the safari jeeps, so they are easily photographed even with standard smartphone cameras. However, the other animals are usually spotted from further away. In that case, a telephoto lens is absolutely needed for crisp, detailed frames of the park’s plentiful birdlife, crocodiles basking on distant reservoir edges, and skittish mammals such as deer or jackals.
