Can I see giant squirrels in Udawalawe?
Yes, you can watch the Grizzled Giant Squirrel and the Sri Lankan Giant Squirrel in the forested zones around Udawalawe National Park.
These big, colourful rodents are tree dwellers and spend most of their time up in the canopy, especially in the tall trees along the Walawe River. You might see them as they bound between branches, or hear them issue sharp, staccato alarm calls when threats like eagles or leopards are near. Having a proper pair of binoculars really helps, and it gives you the chance to see their fine colouring in more detail.
