Are 4WD vehicles required for Udawalawe?
Yes, 4WD vehicles are required if you want to enter and navigate Udawalawe National Park. The park has unpaved, rough dirt tracks plus muddy areas, so the park becomes essentially inaccessible for standard 2WD vehicles.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation requires specialized 4×4 safari jeeps, mostly to protect the natural ground and keep visitors safer. These jeeps also provide the needed ground clearance for deep ruts, muddy patches during the monsoon season, and the uneven savannah surfaces that you meet along the route.
