Udawalawe Ecosystem & Habitats

The Udawalawe area feels alive and constantly changing. You can find thorny scrub patches, wide-open plains with tall grass, and thick forest along the river. At the centre of it all sits a large man-made reservoir.

These places connect in a way that backs a strong food chain. The grassy stretches give large plant-eaters lots of grazing. Along the Walawe River, the shady gallery trees help birds stay cool and safe. They also give cover for nesting. Monkeys and smaller mammals use these forests too.
