What trees grow in Udawalawe?
In Udawalawe, you will find hardy, drought-resistant tree species that have adapted to that harsh dry-zone climate, almost stubbornly. Among the more prominent ones are valuable hardwoods like Satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia), Ebony (Diospyros ebenum) and Halmilla (Berrya cordifolia) that stand out even when the season feels dry.
You will also see the Palu tree (Manilkara hexandra) again and again. Plus Weera (Drypetes sepiaria), and both are known for sweet seasonal fruits. Those fruits attract monkeys, birds, and bears. Normally, these trees are scattered over the plains, but they grow much taller and denser near the riverbanks where water stays on hand all the time.
