Is Udawalawe good in July?
July tends to be one of the most rewarding times for a safari in Udawalawe, because during the main dry season the heat kind of pushes wildlife to show themselves in the open. They really do need water, so you will see animals out and about while they are searching. Elephant sightings are basically assured near the main reservoir and also around the smaller waterholes.
The scenery shifts into a golden, dusty tone as the tall grasses fade back. With less lush cover around, you can notice smaller mammals, and also ground-dwelling birds from farther out than usual. Still, the dry dirt tracks let the jeeps raise a fair amount of dust, so bring a scarf or a mask to shield your face while driving; it is strongly recommended.
