Which fish species live in the Udawalawe Reservoir?

The Udawalawe Reservoir supports a resilient aquatic ecosystem with introduced fish like Tilapia, alongside native species such as the Giant Gourami, Rohu, and other local carp types.

In the past, Tilapia was brought in to strengthen inland angling for the surrounding communities near the dam. Now that fish stock is flourishing, it not only backs the local fishing economy beyond the park limits, but also acts as the key food supply for Udawalawe’s huge crowd of water birds, including Pelicans, Cormorants, and Sea Eagles.
