Which butterflies can be seen in Udawalawe?
Udawalawe has a lively set of dry-zone butterfly species and, most noticeably, the Crimson Rose, Blue Mormon, Common Mormon, and Common Jezebel.
In the park, the variety of plants really matters, especially the flowering scrub along with riverine growth, since those offer perfect host plants for the larvae. You can see butterfly movement increase quite a lot right after the monsoon rains, usually late November through January. At that time, the park feels like it is waking up with fresh green shoots and wildflowers in bloom, and the whole area gets these brilliant flashes of colour over the grounded, earthy look.
