What plants grow in Udawalawe National Park?

Udawalawe flora sits mostly under dry monsoon forest types; there is a lot of tall Guinea grass, and the more resilient scrub bushes such as Flueggea leucopyrus, also called Katu Pila.

The whole place was pushed around by ancient slash-and-burn farming before it became a national park, and that history is likely why you see those broad grassy plains now, in a way that still feels open and expansive. Bigger trees are relatively few, but you can still find important hardwoods like satinwood, ebony, and halmilla. They are mostly seen nearer to the river line, where the moisture stays steadier.
